Functionally Impressed by a Window Stopper

My first apartment in Copenhagen, Denmark. I was checking it out. Good solid building well built. Relatively new. That is, it had been built in the last fifty years.

Everything was functional and simple. Beautifully and simply well constructed from good materials. I was functionally impressed. I learned that things there are made to last. Forever, maybe. Who knows? No one has lived quite that long.

I looked out the window. A couple was loading their bicycles with their two toddlers. Then off they went together, the four of them.

As my gaze came back inside, I noticed the window was held open by a narrow steel bar. The bar was connected to the window sill at one end. A hook in the bar fell into a ring on the window’s frame at the bottom.

I lifted the bar out of the ring and closed the window.

I lived in that apartment a year and a half. The window stopper bar became a constant reminder of things made well, made simple, out of good materials.

The window bar was functional. It had a definite function. It never failed to function. I am certain that many years later that window bar is still functioning as well as ever. It is well maintained. It gets a little lubricant now and then. Its seatings in the window and frame are checked. It continues to function simply and beautifully.

I have often used that window stopper bar to remind myself that I am like that bar. I have a function. I maintain my health. Thus, I maintain my ability to perform my function.

Since my maintenance is more complicated than that of the window bar, my maintenance requires management so that I can maintain my function.

I have some key elements in my function maintenance management program. They go like this.

  • Gather maintenance info
  • Study and sort the info into true/keep untrue/discard
  • Apply the info
    • If it is an action like exercise, I monitor the integration of that exercise until is settled and functioning, becomes a function and then I employ it and routinely monitor its function and its results.
    • If it is a product, I determine where I can get a quality version of the product. The product is going to be one of my self maintenance functions. It has to be functionally perfect, It has to be pure. It has to be dependable. It has to create good and lasting results. When one realizes the importance of products in their maintenace, then one is ecstatic when one finds a producer of products that has a reputation for the production of quality products based on their research, ability to obtain the correct ingredients, the scientific knowledge and expertise needed to produce the products I need on an ongoing basis. And the ability to deliver routinely according to the need schedule.

My search for info is through web pages I can depend on even if I have to create them myself.

My health cafe is one such page. Check it out.

As I said, I don’t want to spend all my time managing my maintenance. But, I do want to maintain my health. I have been doing it a long time. The things I have learned that have value are treasured.

I am able to make my maintenance functional by managing its information. For example, I know what vitamins I need, I know who has the vitamins I need that are of unquestioned quality. The better I manage that and reduce it to routine chores, the more time I have to enjoy my health.

Some people say to me, “oh you take vitamins because you are old.”

I reply, “No, I lived to be old and functional because I take vitamins.”

I had an accident when I was sixty five. One of the doctors said, “I have never seen a sixty five year old as healthy as you are.” I said, “thanks, Doc.”

A few weeks before I had hiked to the top of Mr. Shasta. The upper part was steep icy slopes requiring the use of ice crampons. I did it.

I am not a health nut nor exercise nor sports addict. I have a function.

I am a window bar stopper.

Thanks for listening,
